First Glance: Hoshi no Kirby

Hoshi no Kirby ("Kirby of the Stars") is light fare. A bunch of silly creatures live together in relative harmony—despite incomprehensible social relations between the king (Dedede), the minister (Fumu), the police, the army (Meta Knight), and the primarily sheep-herding peasantry—until one night an octopus demon starts eating all the sheep. Then they have to wait for the Star Warrior Kirby to come save the day, which of course happens, all within the span of the first episode. This is a strong indicator that the series will follow a monster-of-the-week formula.

There are a lot of problems with Hoshi no Kirby. For one, there are three distinct art styles—backgrounds, 2D characters, occasional 3D characters—and they don't mesh well at all. Another issue is that basically every character decision is nonsensical. There is no logical progression between plot points. Kirby refuses to understand dialogue ... sometimes. Kirby just like, gets beat up for five minutes before deciding out of the blue to win? The list goes on. There is no substance here, except for the ending theme song, which teaches you how to draw Kirby.
