First Glance: Steins;Gate 0

Steins;Gate 0 was a bit of an odd request for this category, since it's a ... continuation? spinoff? ... something related to a show that aired a decade ago; that said, I went with it, and now I feel like I should go back and give Slayers NEXT more kudos for being eminently understandable. Steins;Gate 0 is an incomprehensible mess—at least it will be if you're unfamiliar with Steins;Gate... or if you're like me, and you watched Steins;Gate once ten years ago; I didn't care for it enough to commit all the inane plot twists and turns to memory.

Steins;Gate 0 is like its parent show; it has two main modes: one in which it's a spectacularly self-indulgent series of otaku fantasies, and one in which it deals with the trauma and horror of unnecessary death unprevented—or possibly even caused—by time travel. The latter mode, taken individually, might have made an interesting story back in the day; unfortunately, it was never allowed to stand alone and breathe. Steins;Gate 0 episode 1 delivers both modes evenly; I suppose an optimist might hope for future episodes to focus more on the narrative goods and less on hair color, skirt length, and breast size. (Or maybe the optimist is in the target audience; every show has a target audience!)

Visually, Steins;Gate 0 is fine; it's unremarkable, really, which is a plus compared to so many shows. A big plus for this episode was a low ratio of transphobic jokes to Rukako screen time; the previous series was real bad on that front.

Ultimately, the main character's fears and worries become quite compelling by the end of the episode; I intend to keep watching with a morbid curiosity. That said, between this show being incomprehensible to new watchers and the fact that the original just isn't a standout (even within the fairly specific sub-genre of "time travel anime"), it's hard to encourage anyone else to dive in.

Recommend; No.
