First Glance: Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball is old, and it's for kids, and like the other old kids shows I've written about here (Kirby, Pokemon), it's not particularly gripping. We've got a hodgepodge setting, super basic fetch quest plot, juvenile comedy... there's just not that much there. The 1986 visuals certainly don't help. I shouldn't say that Dragon Ball is without its charms. Son Goku is incredibly cute. The talking fauna is a whimsical touch. The character expressions and voice acting are pretty good.

That said, the sheer number of bizarre choices is astounding. The human girl—named after a genre of fetish porn—drives a car through a dinosaur-infested land and shoots the baby Monkey King three times in the face before putting her hands up and asking for a peaceful timeout. The eyecatch features a pig in People's Liberation Army uniform jacking off an umbrella. And let's not forget Wile E. Sabertooth's Looney Tunes plummet to the bottom of a canyon (did Warner Bros not sue?). The absurdity of it all might make for a few laughs in an adult audience, but it's not good.
