First Glance: Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

All Gundam shows can be sorted into two categories: those wherein characters have fairly normal hair, and those wherein characters have absurd hair. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans is my first experience of the latter, and I have to say I greatly enjoyed the first episode. It juggles a huge cast and introduces a number of interesting political situations while also delivering engaging combat action—all within 20 minutes. A number of themes seem topical and it'll be interesting to see how the show handles them.

There is nothing special about the production, which also means there's nothing especially bad about it. Some of the characters are lazy tropes, but there's a good number of interesting ones, and they tend to have memorable names like "Biscuit." One potential pitfall that I hope this series will avoid is that Orga and Mika have a kind of Kamina and Simon1 thing going on, which in itself isn't bad—but Kamina is bad, and Gurren Lagann is bad, and it would just be great if Iron-Blooded Orphans didn't go down that road.
